M AY G A R D EN E R
THIS MONTH IN THE GARDEN
Bearded iris are growing now, and if
your iris bed looks as crowded as these
do,
above,
you’ll need to divide them
this summer. You can do it now and
sacrifice a few blooms this year, or wait
until August. Either way, they’ll be
gorgeous next spring.
Have your pruners handy for
deadheading roses this month.
Rebloomers will respond with better
performance, and the up-close task of
deadheading gives you a chance to
spot the first signs of disease or pests.
Keep pruner blades clean and sharp.
Give aphids a strong blast of water
from the hose to knock them loose—
pesticides are not usually necessary.
If water use is restricted in your area,
use a gloved hand to crush the insects,
or clip the affected part of the plant
and discard it.
